How Did I get into Design?
Hi, I’m Sabina, a Senior Product Designer with a passion for crafting exceptional B2C user experiences. My design journey began when I won a yearbook cover design contest in high school and contributed to the layout of the yearbook. It was there that I first discovered the power of visual storytelling and the impact of design. I’m motivated by a vision of a future where technology harmonizes with the environment, and I strive to create designs that foster innovation while promoting sustainability and environmental well-being.
Education and Learning:
I pursued Multimedia Production at Humber College, where I developed a comprehensive skill set in typography, color theory, and digital illustration. My studies also included interactive design with Macromedia Flash, video production, audio editing, website design, and coding. This broad range of expertise has profoundly shaped my approach to creating engaging, dynamic, and visually stunning digital experiences, laying a solid foundation for my career in design.
Career Journey:
My career started as a Flash Artist at EMI Music, where I designed digital media to promote groundbreaking artists during a transformative period in the music industry. This role introduced me to the power of visual storytelling and engaging digital content, even as the industry was significantly disrupted by Napster.
I then moved on to Ganz, where I played a key role as a Senior User Experience Designer. I contributed to the success of the Webkinz platform by designing a variety of digital and physical products, developing interactive games, and leading philanthropic projects.
Following this, I joined Mapsted as a User Experience Designer. There, I led design efforts for interactive maps used in diverse environments such as malls, museums, and retail stores. I refined accessibility features, improved visual design, and developed comprehensive design projects, including web/app layouts, custom illustrations, and animations.
Most recently, at Enthusiast Gaming, I worked as a Senior Product Analyst focusing on The Sims Resource, a platform for custom content. I led initiatives that increased monthly revenue from $200K to $800K, enhanced user experiences, developed gamification strategies, and collaborated with cross-functional teams to optimize the platform.
Each role has provided me with unique challenges and opportunities, enriching my expertise and shaping my approach to design. From designing engaging digital media and interactive games to optimizing user experiences and enhancing visual design, each project has taught me something new and allowed me to grow as a designer.
Inspiration and Influences:
I draw inspiration from a mix of sources including nature, modern art, and emerging technology trends. Influences from design movements and mentors have profoundly shaped my philosophy, guiding me to blend functionality with aesthetic appeal.
Philosophy and Approach:
I believe that great design goes beyond mere aesthetics; it’s about creating culturally relevant, delightful, and intuitive experiences. My approach focuses on delivering native-feeling designs that enhance user engagement and foster brand loyalty, all while embracing continuous learning and improvement.
Current Focus and Future Goals:
Currently, I’m dedicated to developing end-to-end design solutions for Android, iOS, and web platforms, with a strong focus on driving growth and engagement. Looking ahead, I aspire to further explore innovative design methodologies and collaborate with forward-thinking brands to create impactful projects.
Personal Touch:
Outside of design, I’m passionate about exploring new places and cultures, enjoying a wide range of music, and savoring diverse cuisines. I find inspiration in immersive experiences and nature, particularly through planting and gardening, which connects me to the beauty and growth of the natural world. Movies are another favorite pastime, and I love delving into various genres and cinematic styles. Feel free to visit my portfolio or reach out if you’d like to collaborate or discuss design!
